Interview with Professor Annabel Chen of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Brainbox are proud to announce the recent installation of multiple neurostimulation and neuroimaging systems at the new Cognition and Behavioural Sciences Laboratory at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI), of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The Cognition and Behavioural Sciences Laboratory of WKWSCI, opened in September 2017, is composed of three separate laboratories, each with a different research focus, from physiological and social sciences to cognitive and behavioural research. The laboratory’s unique layout, consisting of three separate ‘hubs’ that bring together three previously self-contained research spaces, ensures that all three laboratories and their research now coexist together bringing together a wide range of facilities and ideas. This new ‘hub’ design means that researchers at the university can now conduct multiple experiments at any given time, and the presence of shared facilities throughout the laboratory allows, as Professor Theng Yin Leng states, ‘creativity and cross-fertilisation of research ideas’ that had, until now, been impossible.

We spoke to Professor Annabel Chen of Nanyang Technological University to gain a deeper understanding of exactly what research the products we installed would be used for. ‘The equipment will be used by researchers mainly in the behavioural, cognitive and social sciences for collaborative research across NTU’, Annabel told us, ‘These include the Communication and Information Sciences, Humanities, Social and Psychological Sciences, Education, and Medical Sciences’.

In the course of these studies, Annabel continues, ‘the equipment will be used to measure’, using the TruScan Research EEG and Brainsight NIRS, ‘and modulate brain function with the capability of MRI guidance’, with the use of the MRI-compatible neuroConn DC- STIMULATOR MC, adding that their capability for hyper scanning also ‘allows social and cultural neuroscientists to understand brain changes during interaction and communication.’
