Our tES-MRI upgraded package integrates Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (tES) with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The integration of both techniques allows users to deliver safe and concurrent tES studies inside an MRI environment, ensuring simultanious stimulation and high quality brain imaging.

tES-MRI Package
tES-mri upgrade
The tES-MRI Package is fully compatible with the tES nurostym device and is specifically designed for safe and reliable use in MRI environments. This upgraded package provides all the specialised accessories needed for seamless, full compatibility between a tES nurostym device and MRI systems to support a range of paradigms including tDCS, tACS, tRNS, and multi-channel stimulation.
nurostym device
The nurostym is a powerful, complete Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (tES) device capable of standard tES modalities: tDCS, tACS, tRNS, pulsed tDCS, amplitiude-modalulated tACS, and analogue input modes. The device offers complete control of stimulation parameters; fully programmable protocols; sham and double-blind controls; advanced safety functions; and user-friendly controls to enable even the most complex of studies using tES.
The Nurostym tES-MRI device upgrade:

- The nurostym supports MRI systems from 1.5T to 7T, offering flexible compatibility for diverse research and clinical environments.
-
The nurostym’s specialised MRI accessories ensure that stimulator hardware and lead routing meet MRI safety standards, keeping patient safety at the forefront of every study. Components are engineered to prevent tissue or device overheating, even during prolonged or high-field MRI sessions, providing researchers with confidence for safe operation. Carefully routed leads, incorporating filtering and RF attenuation, protect MRI data from noise and interference, minimizing artifacts and preserving high-quality, reliable signals during scanning. Together, these features enable safe, consistent, and reproducible simultaneous tES-MRI experiments, supporting robust and trustworthy research outcomes.
- Trigger-in/out hardware (eg, optical or filtered BNC) to safely integrate stimulation timing with MRI sequence triggers.
- The nurostym supports double-blind sham control, analogue signal control, real-time signal output which are all compatible with MRI paradigms.
- The nurostym SPLITTER accessory is fully MRI-compatible, with a dedicated cable and setup provided for seamless integration. This accessory allows up to four return channels from a single active channel, offering greater flexibility and control. The nurostym includes a dedicated switch for each channel, enabling users to accurately measure impedance individually and tailor stimulation with precision.

Seamless Sham Protocols in MRI Studies
Double-blind sham stimulation control is available with the tES-MRI upgrade with a nurostym device. This option allows the researcher to select a pre-defined stimulation protocol. The current delivered will either follow the active stimulation waveform shape, or a pseudo stimulation output. In both cases, the stimulator display will show the same information during real and sham stimulation.
Reliable Triggering for tES in MRI
The triggering capabilities of the tES devices stays the same when applying tES within MRI environments. Brainbox provides a wave guide and custom long cable to connect through the filter panel. The triggering system stays the same as when in regular tES experiments, connected to the computer using a USB input.
